Thinking of starting a blog but don’t know where to start?
Well, here it is. Three easy to follow steps to get you started.
Get ready with your domain name. For me, I chose spicesandspikes.com. Why? Because I love food, and I like watching the spikes on the stocks I’m trading. 🙂 (Yes, I do stocks trading as well and I’m going to blog about that later, too. So watch out for it!). What’s yours?
TIP: Choose a combination of words that are not so obvious because chances are that someone has already taken them.
Once you have your domain name ready, head to Bluehost to see if the domain name you have in mind is still available by entering it in a form that looks something like:
If you are asked to select a plan, I suggest you go for the Starter, charged one lump sum (e.g. 1 year) rather than monthly. Mine, I chose it for 3 years as I think it’s the best deal. So go ahead and select one.
Now just fill in the required fields with your account, package (as shown below) and billing information, then click Submit. As for me, I ticked Domain Privacy Protection as well to keep my personal information such as email address and phone number private. It should just take a few minutes to process your domain name. Once it’s done, you should receive a Welcome email from Bluehost with your account information.
Now that you have your domain all done, the second part is to setup WordPress. WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS). It is made for bloggers like us, so we can focus on our content and not have to worry so much on building a website itself. So, let’s go ahead and install it. To do that, login to https://my.bluehost.com/web-hosting/cplogin with the username (and password) you supplied during the registration of your domain. On your Bluehost control panel, you’ll see under website the link to Install WordPress, just like below. Go ahead and click that.
Once WordPress installation is complete, you should be presented with the Notification Center, just like below. Click on View Credentials to see the access details of your New WordPress site. Go ahead and click on the Admin URL.
At this stage, you should have a working website. Congratulations! How does it feel so far?
The default WordPress install comes with a very basic look and feel. This is the part where you accessorize it and make it look just the way you want it. It’s time you pick a theme! A theme is the face of your website.
You’ll find a number of them here. However, if you’re looking for a premium one, check out these options:
- The Genesis Framework – This is what we chose right off the bat with the Foodie Pro Theme. Have a look also at StudioPress Themes.
- Elegant Themes – This is another option for you to choose. Elegant Themes have come up with Divi WordPress Theme. Check it out.
That’s it! Welcome to the world of blogging my friend!
